as
Nutcracker Prince with The Phoenix Ballet
MJ (Miquel Jose Maldonado Chapman, Jr.)
Local Dancer, Sedona's Rising Star
The Sedona Chamber Ballet is excited to inform you that one of our local Sedona dancers will perform the coveted role of Nutcracker Prince in the Phoenix Ballet production of The Nutcracker.
The production will be live streamed December 18, 19, and 20, 2020.
Miquel Jose Maldonado Chapman, Jr. (better known as MJ), is a 12 year old who began his ballet studies in 2015 and is progressing quickly. He has trained with many teachers at Master Ballet Academy in Scottsdale, recently rated the 4th best ballet academy in the US, Achmed Valk in Sedona, as well as teachers from around the world in various master classes. MJ has also attended summer intensives at Master Ballet Academy. He is determined to make a career out of ballet and is eager to dance professionally.
MJ dances over twenty hours a week at the esteemed Master Ballet Academy as well rehearses every weekend. It is very difficult to secure soloist roles in a professional production and this is a testament to MJ’s hard work, discipline, tenacity and of course his amazing talent. In order to ensure that MJ achieves his dreams, the family lives in Scottsdale during the week so MJ can attend ballet classes and school.
MJ has performed in many productions in the past years. Most notably, he was Sneezy in the Phoenix Ballet production of Snow White and any of you will remember his wonderful performance as Fritz in the 2018 and 2019 Phoenix Ballet performance of The Nutcracker. In addition MJ had the honor of performing an original piece choreographed by Achmed Valk in the Sedona International City of Peace performance on World Peace Day.
In January 2021, MJ will present 2 pieces at the Phoenix Youth American Grand Prix (YAGP). First, MJ will perform an original contemporary piece by the renowned choreographers Rasta Thomas and Albert Blaise Cattafi. Second, MJ will also perform ballet variations from Don Quixote and Swan Lake. YAGP, the Youth American Grand Prix, is the world's largest non-profit international student ballet competition and scholarship program, open to dance students of all nationalities, 9–19 years old. YAGP annually conducts regional auditions in the United States and around the world, with the Final Round of the competition held in New York City every April.
As you know large performances have been cancelled throughout the state due to the pandemic and it is a testament to Phoenix Ballet to provide young dancers the opportunity to rehearse and perform in 2020.
Purchasing a ticket to see the live streaming production of The Nutcracker supports MJ and the Phoenix Ballet company as well as young dancers.
